The sanctuary for horses
‘Kahu’ – a Hawaiian word meaning guardian, protector or carer. This is exactly what I want to be for the horses with my team: Protector, guardian of their stories, their dignity and their second chance.

Our history, mission and values
My name is Jasmin Ommer, I am the founder and president of the organisation KAHU Mallorca.
Horses have been with me since I was a child. I was active in dressage for a long time – until I realised that this path was taking me further and further away from what horses really need: Respect, patience, freedom. I turned away from the sport – and towards the souls that nobody wanted anymore.
I have been taking in abused, neglected, traumatised or sick horses for over 15 years, starting in Ibiza and moving to Mallorca 8 years ago. From my own resources, with my own money, with complete dedication. Today, eleven horses live with me on Mallorca – each one with its own character, scars and history.
Because there are more and more of them, I decided to found KAHU Mallorca as an association. So that I no longer have to do this work alone. And so that even more horses can be helped. A species-appropriate home, medical care, lots of time – all of this is precious. Especially here on Mallorca, where feed and care incur enormous costs.

Over the last 1.5 decades, I have also been able to help many, many horses find a new home – these were not horses that lived with me but where I was asked for help because the owners could no longer keep them for various reasons. There were a lot of ‘RESCUES’, horses with behavioural problems due to their bad experiences and some of which were not without danger, horses that were ill and had no chance of recovery.
Thanks to my really large and great network, especially in Germany, I was always able to find a wonderful place for the animals and I am/was still in contact with the people who let me have something from them from time to time. They are great people who have never shied away from adopting a somewhat ‘different’ horse, often with the financial support of friends for the rather expensive transport. Spain is a tough place for animals in general, the husbandry is in some cases not up to date and the treatment is harsh. The certainty of knowing that these horses are in loving hands is priceless; every living creature has the right to a respectful and species-appropriate life.
